Fresh Foodie: Korean Beef Tacos with Mexican Sass
Jan 2013 29

Crockpot Kore-xican Beef Tacos

Being a lifelong East Coast girl (with West Coast dreams) I’ve never enjoyed Asian or Mexican food.

Don’t you dare gasp at me!

Let me clarify, I don’t like fake-ass-Americanized-unhealthy-wannabe-Asian-and-Mexican-food. If I head to the west coast, Mexico, or lately, Australia, I am more than happy to eat those cuisines because it actually tastes delicious and authentic.

That being said, I find myself creating a lot of Mexican inspired dishes lately; And yesterday, I tried to go down the Asian route, and took a shot at creating Korean Beef Tacos. Ultimately, it ended up being a beautiful fusion of flavors in what I would classify as an interracial marriage between Korean & Mexican lovers.

This is easy to make, the prep time is quick, and the outcome will surpass your expectations. So, dive in!

Red Bull Stratos: Space Jump Recap & Musikk
Oct 2012 15

So yesterday I was completely late to the party on all accounts. Not only had Red Bull Stratos been in production planning for multiple years, but I didn’t even know it was happening until 3 minutes and 7 seconds into the free fall.

Hello struggle city.

My brain was on overload as I watched this blurry speck fall through the atmosphere with question after question flooding my mind.

“How high up is he?”

“Will he flatten if he goes too fast??”

“Is he going to burst into flames?”

“How much money did Red Bull spend on this project??”

“What happens if something goes wrong???”

It’s safe to say that Red Bull is the coolest company in the world. Just on a whole other level. If I could go to work and be like, “Hey so I think we should sponsor some guy to free fall from the edge of the atmosphere. You know what, let’s get NASA involved. Oooh and maybe we could tape the entire thing so we could stream it live!” – I’m pretty sure I would be admitted for psychiatric evaluation.

Luckily, everything went smoothly, and thanks to modern technology, the entire world was able to be a part of this incredible feat. Above everything else, Felix Baumgartner is truly an inspiration with his bravery and ability to take that ‘next step’ that scares so many people. Unlike him, our ‘next step’ usually doesn’t involve a 24 mile free fall.

Watch Red Bull’s incredible re-cap, as well as Felix’s terrifyingly awesome headcam footage!

And how about that damn landing?! Impressive.

Ad Musikk: Apple iPod – Bounce
Oct 2012 15

How does Apple do it? They always seem to find fresh, lesser-known songs for their iPod commercials and blow them up (in a good way). Who doesn’t remember the iPod Nano ad introducing most of the world to Fiest with “1, 2, 3, 4”? Well, they did it again with their latest commercial for the new generation of iPods.

The spot is called “Bounce” and the artist getting the spotlight this time is Willy Moon. Before I get into the song, check out the spot:

So like I said the artist is Willy Moon and the song is called “Yeah Yeah”. Moon hails from New Zealand but current lives and works out of London. He’s been releasing music since 2010, but this is probably a lot of people’s first encounter with his music that is described by MTV as “a brilliantly odd fusion of 50s rock’n’roll and modern production using hip-hop production techniques”. The song’s heavy beat, drums, and horns all fit the visuals of the commercial perfectly and definitely grabs your attention and keeps it for the 30 seconds the ad runs. Willy Moon has a style all his own (just check out the video for “Yeah Yeah”) and looks to have a good career ahead of him if he can take advantage of the wave this commercial is going to bring him and keep releasing good stuff.

Always Always Remember
Sep 2012 11

We say always remember as if it would be possible to forget.

We carry images of burning buildings, fiery explosions – snapshots of our world literally crumbling around us – to be left with dusty, ash-filled remnants of what used to be. The shattered shell frame of the buildings represented the hollow shells of ourselves, and what we had become those first few days after. After the numbness wore off, the pain invariably resided. Everywhere. Around every corner, behind every doorway, buried in every home, and within every heart.

Eleven years later and we are still rebuilding.

Rebuilding our city, rebuilding our preparedness, rebuilding our faith…

But we never had to fix our pride. It never wavered. The deep, profound strength of love that emerged was an admirable visceral reaction. To find love within terror, is something that we can always be proud of.

So don’t just remember those images. Remember the heroes, the neighbors, the friends & family, the complete and total strangers that united in love, determined to stand amidst the rubble.

“When the history books are written, the true legacy of 9/11 will not be one of fear or hate or division. It will be a safer world; a stronger nation; and a people more united than ever before.” – President Obama

What did you learn from 9/11?

Ad Musikk: Heineken – The Switch
Aug 2012 27

I’ve always been a music lover, but right up there on my list of passions is advertising. I’m currently working in the advertising industry and have always loved the impact music can make on a commercial. While some people hate when their favorite musicians “sell out” and have their music appear in ads, I think its a great way to expose a wider audience to a sound they might not have ever heard before. Whenever I see a commercial with a really effective music choice or one featuring a great song that I hadn’t heard before I’ll post it under Ad Musikk.

To kick this series off, I’d like to introduce you to Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes, whose song “Love Letter” appears in the new Heineken spot called “The Switch”. Check out the commercial below:

The concept and execution are both really well done, but the star of the spot is the music. There is no denying that Clairy Browne brings back memories of Amy Winehouse with her emotive, raw, and timeless voice. As soon as the spot came on TV the music grabbed my attention and kept it the entire time. I had to get on my phone and figure out who that amazing voice was coming out of. Turns out “Love Letter” has been out for nearly a year and is the lead track on Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes album, Baby Caught The Bus. The soulful, classic feel of the song fits perfectly with the ad and in my mind the music choice is what makes the commercial stand out from the rest.

Stream “Love Letter” below and if you like what you hear grab Baby Caught The Bus on iTunes:

Anthony Bourdain & Sleigh Bells Do It Big In Austin
Aug 2012 24

Reason # 83567 why I love Anthony Bourdain.

There are four instances for when I watch tv:

1. It’s Shark Week.

2. I watch Friends every night before I go to bed. 11 o’clock clean up spot – Holler at me Nick @ Nite.

3. Bizarre Foods. I constantly imitate Andrew Zimmern’s face of approval.

4. No Reservations. Clearly because I’m in love with Anthony Bourdain. Or as I like to call him, Tony.

There’s no rhyme or reason for my love, because his level of attractiveness coupled with his age truly shouldn’t pique my interest, but it does. I watch probably two to three episodes a week (all repeats at this point), and my bf is either a really good sport for sitting through them, or genuinely enjoys the show too. It’s debatable.

This time, Tony links up with Sleigh Bells in Austin and does what any decent person should do in the city: eat, drink, listen to music, and get a tattoo from a band member. Naturally.

YELLE – Amour Du Sol
Aug 2012 22

I don’t think there is an artist out there who puts a smile on my face faster than Yelle. She’s one of the most refreshing electro artists I’ve ever come across, which is perhaps because of her magical, bubbly beats, her electro-chic style, or the fact that while I don’t understand a word she says (it’s all in French, which I cannot speak. Sorry ’bout it), I still totally understand the emotions she’s infusing into her music.

Here at Fresh Musikk, we’re all about expressing how musikk makes us feel & the memories evoked when listening to a particular song. Yelle puts a smile on my face faster than any other artist out there because the ONLY memories I associate with her are amazing ones. Seeing her live with my friends, driving down Santa Monica Blvd blaring her music & dancing, watching the sunset after a perfect day– I’ve had many fantastic Yelle moments in my life. I hope that everyone takes some time to get to know this fabulous French phenomenon so that you too can start making memories with her & ride the beat back.

I dare you to listen to “Amour Du Sol” above and not smile.
