"Always Alright" -Alabama Shakes (Silver Linings Playbook Soundtrack)
Feb 2013 01

I went and saw

Silver Linings Playbook this past weekend with some friends and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Impeccably cast, surprisingly touching, undeniably comical.   Mental illness runs rampant in my family, but let’s face it… we’re all a little fucked up in the head.  Silver Linings Playbook brilliantly illuminates this reality through comedy without being insensitive.

I’ll get to the point.  The soundtrack is the shit, highlighted by “Always Alright” by Alabama Shakes.  Have a listen.

TGIF, shoutout to all the crazies out there. Love you.

"Call Your Girlfriend" Robyn/ SNL Dance Comparison
Dec 2012 21

Since I’m forced to stay at home with a bad cold on Friday of the last Christmas party weekend, I’m looking for just about anything that will put me in a better mood. This impersonation of Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend” does the trick every time.

Taran Killam, a member of the Saturday Night Live cast, did this dance at 4:30 am during the SNL staff’s Friday writing night in front of everyone

in the writer’s room. Which basically just confirms that working for SNL would be both the most ridiculous and hilarious job of all time.

And as for Robyn’s music video that was released in 2011, it was practically begging to be made fun of because the dancing is so awkwardly painful that you can’t look away. I have to give Taran Killam credit because he definitely did her uncomfortable dance moves justice, but the guy with the flashlight stole the show for me, especially at the end.

So if you’re sick like me or just having an uneventful Friday check out this hysterical impersonation.

Sunnies Friday: “Beauty and A Beat” – Justin Bieber ft. Nicki Minaj
Oct 2012 12

Hell yea I did it!

No f*cking way I’d let a self-directed Bieber video come out and not make it my Sunnies Friday post of the week. This is pure popalicious gold. “Beauty and A Beat” is the only way I’d ever listen to Nicki Minaj nowadays, and is obviously a guilty pleasure Bieber Fever song that I can’t get out of my head.

Olympus got some juicy, little product placement out of the deal as The Biebs wrote, performed, and directed the video – where he gets down and splashy with some booty shaking ladies, water slides, and synchronized swimmers. Nicki then takes it to the next level when she talks about Justin’s “weiner”. Back off Barbz, Selena’s got it covered.

Also, I’m kind of confused if his camera was actually stolen as he reported a few days ago, or if it was all a publicity stunt for the video? Touché Bieber.

For real though, I’m obsessed with this video. Pregame potential.

Sunnies Friday: “Illuminate” – DJ Change ft. Brenton Matheus
Aug 2012 24

Go ahead, light up your weekend. Better yet, “Illuminate” it with the help of this track by DJ Change featuring Brenton Matheus.

I’ve been sitting on this one for a few weeks and it’s about time that I got my act together. The all original mix oozes warm weather and summer vibes – perfect for my California destination. The uplifting production is absolutely made for a dance floor setting, and the rising vocals match the crescendo of sounds, that maximize that party effect. Raise the volume on this one if you just hit the college campus!

A sunny song for Sunnies Friday.

Sunnies Friday: “Thinkin Bout You (Ryan Hemsworth Bootleg)”, Frank Ocean
Aug 2012 03

Good morning over here on the west coast. I know it’s well into Friday afternoon back east, but in good old Portland, Oregon the masses are still filing into work. What better way to get over the painful reminder of the fun you had last night than a smooth remix of an even smoother track.

Since it first leaked in late July 2011 I’ve been a huge fan of Frank Ocean‘s “Thinkin Bout You” (check out my post about the unofficial video from way back in September of last year). The song is arguably the strongest from his critically-acclaimed debut album, Channel Orange, so I was a little weary when I first came across Ryan Hemsworth’s remix.

After giving it a couple listens, I gotta say that overall Ryan did a great job. He fills out the song and adds some really interesting touches that gives the track a new feel but still stays true to the original. My only gripe comes around 2:30 in the song where I feel the effects overpower Frank’s vocals too much. On the whole, though, the Ryan Hemsworth Bootleg is at the very least worth a listen (and in my opinion a download). Don’t just take it from me; the remix is currently sitting pretty at #1 on Hype Machine’s most popular tracks.

Sunnies Friday: Ghost Beach & Trails And Ways
Jul 2012 13

After a phenomenal, party-focused, holiday week, this work week seemed infinitely longer; So to reward your four strenuous days of detox, exhaustion, and your inevitable inability to remain attentive, Fresh Musikk is throwing two songs your way on Sunnies Friday!

We’ve featured both these artists and their original mixes on FM in the last couple months, Trails and Ways’s, “Nunca” made an appearance in the Sunnies Friday category, and Ghost Beach’s, “Miracle” also managed to brighten up our day.

Lucky for us, the two groups decided to swap songs and put their own spin & musical influence into each. Trails and Ways created an awesome cover of “Miracle”, most noticeably by having smooth, calming female vocals, then later they spice it up with some latin flavor and Spanish lovin’.

Ghost Beach gave the remix treatment to “Nunca” and contrasted the Carribbean sounds with a modernized, and more energetic electronic flow, that bumps up the dance-ability of the track. Dance-ability is my new word, go with it.

Sunnies Friday: "Next Big Thing" – Chester French ft. Pusha T & Pharrell
Jun 2012 22

*Sunnies Friday*

Thanks to a tremendously successful Gambino concert last night, I fit the Sunnies Friday stereotype perfectly. I’ve been hungover all day, and quite literally have been staring idly at my computer screen. In fact, it’s taken me 43 minutes to type these three sentences. Struggle.

Chester French just released their album, Music 4 TNGRS, which represents two and a half years of work, and the D.A.’s honest reflections on what life is all about. “Next Big Thing” featuring Pusha T. & Pharrell is featured on the project, and maintains a darker vibe with rays of light trying to shine through. The slower, rock infused beat and bittersweet vocals reflect our society’s hope for all of those, ‘next big things’ that simply can’t hold that title forever. Pusha & our favorite N.E.R.D. bring an added perspective to the song, and make it easy to listen to bob your head to this as you eagerly await 5 o’clock to hit. Thanks to a tremendously successful Gambino concert last night, I fit the Sunnies Friday stereotype perfectly. Sunnies Friday: “Nunca” – Trails and Ways
Jun 2012 15

* Sunnies Friday *

You gotta love a group who defines their musical genre as “bossa nova dream pop.”

Trails and Ways is a quartet out of Oakland, CA, who seemingly grabbed inspiration from the California sunshine to create “Nunca.” The song has soft, calming vocals that dance along the bubbly beat, creating a sunny yet peaceful track.

The new music video reflects the feel-good vibe of the song, by epitomizing the hippy, laidback attitude of Californians, through 1970’s visuals of boardwalks, mustaches, smiles, and shreddable surf.

Sunnies Friday is a bit late this week, but hey, I’m on West Coast time…but actually…holler at me if you’re in SoCal. LATER.
